Do you have 20 or more browser tabs open at all times? Are you tired of some random site or Flash ad crashing your browser and causing you to lose your (say) Google Docs data in another tab? If so, Site Specific Browsers (SSBs) provide a great solution for your WebApp woes. Using Fluid, you can create SSBs to run each of your favorite WebApps as a separate Cocoa desktop application. Fluid gives any WebApp a home on your Mac OS X desktop complete with Dock icon, standard menu bar, logical separation from your other web browsing activity, and many, many other goodies. The social networker’s golden rules compiled by Debrett’s with Orange are:

1. You don’t have to make friends with people you don’t know. Think before you poke.

2. Wait 24 hours before accepting or removing someone as a friend. The delay will help you gather your thoughts.

3. Birthdays, engagements and weddings are not “virtual” events. Always send cards or phone friends when there is an important event.

4. Think before posting a friend’s photo what you would feel like if it was you.

5. Think carefully about your profile picture. Would you want it to be appearing in your local newspaper?

Manners still matter when you’re poking on Facebook | Oddly Enough | Reuters

Carl Sagan - A thousand years of darkness (via thingsihaveseen2) - In this excerpt from the final episode of Sagan’s ‘Cosmos,’ he discusses why the momentous discoveries of the ancient world were unable to prevent the dark ages from virtually banishing scientific thought for a millennium, and how the ancient world’s greatest repository of knowledge, the great library of Alexandria, met its regrettable end. A sobering statement on what ignorance, apathy and fanaticism can do if left unchallenged.

“IM provides a means of obtaining task relevant information rapidly and with minimal disruption, allowing a worker to ask clarifying questions without the expectation of engaging in a longer conversation. Alternatively, it can be used to participate in a sustained form of low-intensity collaboration… Setting up a line of communication via IM is as easy as making a phone call, and the line can be kept open indefinitely, allowing participants to query one another infrequently on an as-needed basis and with the expectation that a response will be forthcoming at the next convenient opportunity.” (via Study Finds Instant Messaging Helps Productivity - HotHardware ) “IM provides a means of obtaining task relevant information rapidly and with minimal disruption, allowing a worker to ask clarifying questions without the expectation of engaging in a longer conversation.
